Kidnapped and Tortured Over a False Rumor: The Ordeal of Sem Olayo in Bacalar

Sem Olayo Lira, a 38-year-old man, shows visible injuries after being kidnapped and tortured in Bacalar, Quintana Roo, over a false rumor.

Bacalar, Quintana Roo — A 38-year-old man from Puebla was kidnapped and tortured by an armed group in the tourist town of Bacalar after being falsely accused of belonging to a rival criminal organization, authorities confirmed.

Sem Olayo Lira was abducted from his home in the Buenavista community on April 23 while speaking on the phone with his partner, Mariana. She heard screams and a struggle before the line went dead. His family launched a desperate search, posting missing person alerts on social media.

Three days later, Olayo was found alive but bearing visible marks of abuse on his face and arms. In his testimony, he said his captors tortured him based on a false rumor that he was a member of a rival cartel. They initially sought revenge, not ransom. Only after realizing their mistake did they release him.

“I was kidnapped and tortured for something that wasn’t true,” Olayo said.

The case has sparked concern about the dangers of unverified accusations spreading on social media and messaging apps, which can lead to vigilante violence. Authorities have not announced any arrests.

Olayo is now recovering from his ordeal, but his message is a warning: “A rumor can destroy an innocent life.”
