Kantunilkín Fair Begins with Sacred Ceiba Tree Ritual

Participants cutting the sacred ceiba tree during the Kantunilkín fair inauguration

KANTUNILKÍN, MX. — Combining religious and cultural traditions, residents of Lázaro Cárdenas inaugurated the Fair in Honor of the Virgin of the Immaculate Conception with the cutting of the sacred ceiba tree, which is carried to the church and then planted in the bullring arena.

With the blessing of a Maya priest, the presence of the Fair’s deputies, and municipal authorities, the community gathered for the ceiba tree cutting ceremony. The first axe blow was delivered by Municipal President Josué Nivardo Mena Villanueva, followed by other participants until the tree was completely cut down.

Subsequently, it was carried on shoulders for a journey of approximately five kilometers, from the field to the church and from the church to the Fair Park.

The procession included the President, council members, public officials, fair organizers, and the community, who socialized to the rhythm of traditional music.

“These are the traditions of our municipal seat, celebrating 166 years since its founding; let us remember that the ceiba is the sacred tree of the Maya; to ensure good harvests, we ask permission from Mother Earth to hold the celebration,” explained Nivardo Mena.

The celebrations will last 12 days starting today, with the inauguration activities concluding tonight with the traditional vaquería and jarana dance in the Central Plaza.
