Cozumel, Mexico — The non-profit citizen group KAN Cozumel has initiated a fundraising campaign to support its free sterilization and vaccination services for dogs and cats on the island. The funds raised will enable the continuation of these campaigns, which aim to reduce the street animal population and improve animal health through the support of local volunteers and donors.

A Campaign for Animal Welfare

The fundraising effort, which begins on November 1, will take the form of a bazaar selling various items. The organization anticipates significant participation in this community-driven initiative, which is supported by collaborating veterinarians.

Laura de la Fuente, a representative of the initiative, explained that KAN Cozumel is a non-profit citizen group. The expenses for the various services they offer are covered through direct donations from businesses and companies. These services are provided from a suitably adapted location in the Emiliano Zapata neighborhood.

The public is invited to participate in the bazaar, where items will be offered at a representative price. Many people can also donate materials to be sold, such as Christmas decorations they no longer use ahead of the season, clothing, footwear in good condition with potential for a second use, and even some small appliances or furniture.

The objective is to raise as much money as possible to continue offering free sterilization services for dogs and cats. These services are available for pets brought in by their owners, as well as for street animals under a capture, vaccinate, sterilize, and return program, with follow-up if someone is interested in adoption.

Volunteers from KAN Cozumel are preparing a new free sterilization drive for dogs and cats. For street dogs and cats, sterilization serves as population control, and vaccination provides an opportunity to prevent future contagion of potential diseases, which could otherwise be spread throughout the city or transmitted to owned dogs.

De la Fuente noted that since 2023, when they began these activities, they have sterilized 1,897 dogs and cats on the island. With community support, they aim to extend their coverage to more people who request their services. The bazaar will be held at their facilities on Avenida 95 bis between streets 12 and 14 in the Emiliano Zapata colony on November 1 from 9:00 in the morning until 4:00 in the afternoon.
