Judge Orders Pretrial Detention for Man Accused of Extorting Cancún Mototaxi Drivers

Cancún mototaxi drivers wait for passengers along a city street in Benito Juárez, Quintana Roo

Cancún, Quintana Roo — A control judge has linked a man identified as Jorge Luis “N” to trial for his alleged role in the aggravated extortion of mototaxi operators in the municipality of Benito Juárez, home to this resort city.

According to the Quintana Roo State Prosecutor’s Office, investigators believe the suspect threatened and intimidated drivers to force them to pay protection fees, a practice known in Mexico as “derecho de piso.”

Prosecutors say the pressure campaign included leaving threatening messages at the transport union’s offices, along with a fired bullet.

Assault Alleged as Pressure Tactic

Investigators also accuse Jorge Luis “N” of physically assaulting one of the operators, allegedly to pressure him into meeting the financial demands.

Based on evidence gathered in the case file, the Prosecutor’s Office requested and obtained an arrest warrant from a control judge. Authorities later carried out the arrest.

At the hearing, the judge ruled that the suspect should face trial for aggravated extortion and ordered him held under mandatory pretrial detention.

Separate Drug Case

The State Prosecutor’s Office said Jorge Luis “N” is also facing a separate prosecution for crimes against health in the form of small-scale drug dealing, specifically the alleged possession of cannabis with intent to supply.

He will remain in custody under the pretrial measures as investigations continue in both cases.
