Jewelry Store Heist on Highway 307 Ends in Shootout, Cop Hurt

Quintana Roo, Mexico — A violent robbery attempt at matises&co jewelry store on Federal Highway 307, near the border between Playa del Carmen and Puerto Morelos, escalated into a shootout that left one police officer injured. The confrontation prompted a large-scale mobilization of security forces, including state police and ministerial agents from Benito Juárez municipality.

Armed Robbery Sparks Intense Shootout

The incident occurred around 9:20 a.m. when armed assailants stormed the jewelry store, assaulting employees with their firearms before attempting to flee with stolen valuables. Employees reported that the suspects struck them with the butts of their weapons before being intercepted by responding officers.

A gunfight ensued, leaving spent shell casings and bullet impacts on a nearby security booth. During the pursuit, officers apprehended one suspect on a dirt path close to the store, seizing a motorcycle and a firearm used in the escape. The detained individual sustained injuries during the arrest and was treated by paramedics before being transferred to the Puerto Morelos Attorney General’s Office.

Officer Hospitalized, Employees Treated for Injuries

The wounded officer was transported to a hospital for treatment, while two jewelry store employees received medical attention for facial injuries but did not require hospitalization.

Authorities in Playa del Carmen implemented a security operation at the city’s main checkpoint, causing traffic delays as part of the response to the violent incident. Investigators from Cancún and Puerto Morelos conducted follow-up procedures.

The robbery follows recent criminal activity in the area, including the June 6 discovery of a murdered Seven Eleven employee in Playa del Carmen, ruled as a robbery-related homicide. Two suspects, one a minor, were arrested in connection with the stabbing.

Security concerns persist in Quintana Roo, with residents citing rising crime rates and inadequate law enforcement responses.
