Tampa, Florida — A JetBlue Airbus A320, en route from Cancún, Mexico, to Newark, New Jersey, was forced to make an emergency landing in Tampa, Florida, on Friday, resulting in injuries to several passengers.
The aircraft experienced a sudden loss of altitude during its journey, prompting the pilots to divert to Tampa International Airport shortly before 2:30 p.m. local time. The flight had originated from Cancún International Airport with a scheduled destination of Newark Liberty International Airport.
Altitude Drop and Onboard Medical Care
According to a statement from JetBlue, the aircraft "experienced an altitude drop" during the flight, which led the pilots to execute a precautionary emergency landing.
"Medical personnel met the passengers and crew, and those who needed additional attention were transported to a local hospital," the airline said in a communiqué.
The exact number of injured persons has not been officially confirmed. However, air traffic control audio disseminated by LiveATC.net referenced at least three injured passengers, including one with a possible head laceration.
Investigation Underway
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has confirmed it has opened an investigation into the incident. JetBlue has removed the aircraft from service for a full inspection.
"The safety of our customers and crewmembers is always our first priority, and we will work to support those involved," the company stated.
According to preliminary reports from the specialized portal aviationnews.eu, the problem may have involved one of the Airbus's flight control systems, a key component for maintaining the aircraft's stability and direction.
