Playa del Carmen’s Jerónimo Abogado Shines at Youth Windsurfing World Championship

Jerónimo Abogado competing in windsurfing

PLAYA DEL CARMEN, Q. ROOJerónimo Abogado, a young windsurfer from Playa del Carmen and representative of Marina Puerto Aventuras, returned home with a strong 12th‑place finish at the 2025 Youth Sailing World Championships in Vilamoura, Portugal. Competing in the IQFOiL Class, one of the most competitive and technically demanding disciplines in youth windsurfing, Abogado stood out among dozens of the world’s top junior sailors.

The IQFOiL Class is recognized by World Sailing as the cutting‑edge formula for windsurfing competition and is also the equipment selected for the Olympic windsurfing discipline under the iQFOiL system. Youth World Championships in this class bring together the best under‑19 windsurfers from around the globe, racing on hydrofoil boards that lift above the water at high speeds.

Across nine races held in the variable but challenging Atlantic conditions off Vilamoura, Abogado competed against athletes from traditional sailing powerhouses. The event was dominated by Israel’s Peleg Rajuan, who took first place overall, followed by Italy’s Mattia Saoncella and Australia’s Rory Meeha.

Abogado’s 12th‑place result makes him one of the top young windsurfers in the world, and notably he finished as the third‑highest competitor from the Americas. This places him ahead of most of his regional peers and underscores Mexico’s rising profile in competitive windsurfing.

Earlier in 2025, Abogado also represented Mexico at major international regattas — including competing at the Trofeo Princesa Sofía in Mallorca, Spain, an important early season test for top class sailors around the world.

A medalist at the CONADE National Olympics in windsurfing and a standout in youth sailing circuits across Mexico, Abogado continues to train with his coach Tony Ramos, focusing on both international competition and qualification for multi‑sport regional games. His performance in Portugal positions him strongly as he sets his sights on the 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games in Santo Domingo and future international championships.

The success of athletes like Abogado highlights Quintana Roo’s emergence as a national windsurfing powerhouse, a region known for consistent wind conditions and a growing community of competitive sailors
