A majestic jaguar was captured prowling the patios of a home near the North Arch in Cancun, causing astonishment and concern among residents of the area.
The sighting of this magnificent specimen of nature joins other similar events in the region, since it is not the first time that a jaguar has been seen exploring the patios of homes near natural areas. The presence of these felines underlines the proximity of human settlements to their natural habitat and the need to promote coexistence and conservation measures.
Residents of the area have expressed a mix of fascination and alarm at the appearance of the jaguar, a cultural and ecological symbol of the region. Sighting of jaguars have become more and more frequent in residential neighborhoods including Cancun and Puerto Aventuras. Many attribute this to the construction of the Tren Maya driving them from their habitats. Others say the big cats are looking for water as this season’s heat wave has dried up many of their regular watering holes.
Environmental authorities have been notified of the incident and are expected to take appropriate measures to ensure the safety of both the jaguar and the neighbors.
