Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo — The municipal government of Isla Mujeres is preparing for an international audit on May 7 to renew the Blue Flag certification for Playa Norte and Playa Centro, officials announced.
The evaluation, conducted by the Blue Flag International Audit Committee, will assess the beaches against 33 international criteria covering water quality, visitor safety, infrastructure, services, and environmental education initiatives.
Through the Federal Maritime Terrestrial Zone office, the city has maintained ongoing efforts to meet these standards, including cleaning, maintenance, signage, staff training, and promotion of environmental best practices among locals and tourists.
If the certification is renewed, Isla Mujeres will achieve five consecutive years of Blue Flag status for both beaches, reinforcing its position as a sustainable and competitive tourism destination committed to environmental stewardship.
