Isla Mujeres, Mexico — Demonstrating a firm commitment to the welfare and economic stability of local fishermen, the Isla Mujeres City Council, under the leadership of Mayor Atenea Gómez Ricalde, conducted the second distribution of aid under the "Familia Pescadora 2025" program this afternoon.
Support for Sustainable Fishing
The event, held at the "Las Hormiguitas Obreras" Park Dome, included the delivery of food packages and the announcement of electronic card disbursements for financial assistance. The program aims to bolster the economy of the municipality’s fishermen while promoting adherence to fishing bans to ensure marine sustainability.
A total of 305 fishermen from five local cooperatives—Patria y Progreso, Macax, Caribe, Justicia Social, and Isla Blanca—as well as independent fishermen, benefited from this initiative during the current bimonthly cycle.
Continued Commitment to Fishermen
Mayor Gómez reaffirmed her administration’s dedication to supporting fishing families, confirming that "Familia Pescadora 2025" will remain active throughout the year. She emphasized the program’s human-centered, social, and solidarity-driven approach, stating, "Today, fishermen know they have a government that listens, recognizes their daily efforts, and transforms their reality."
In addition to food aid, each beneficiary received a financial disbursement of 1,000 pesos through pre-distributed electronic cards. The mayor also presented the first infrastructure improvement stimulus of 250,000 pesos to the Justicia Social cooperative, the first group to submit a proposal under this initiative.
Addressing Cooperative Needs
Gómez noted that while each cooperative has distinct needs, most have completed their documentation, paving the way for forthcoming aid allocations. These funds will support dock repairs, infrastructure upgrades, or necessary equipment.
Concluding the event, the mayor reiterated her administration’s focus on aiding the most vulnerable, underscoring that programs like "Familia Pescadora 2025" demonstrate how public resources can be effectively channeled into community well-being.
