New Public Viewpoint Enhances Isla Mujeres Tourism and Community

Construction site of Mirador Mar Turquesa public viewpoint in Isla Mujeres

ISLA MUJERES, QR. — The Mirador Mar Turquesa project has formally begun in Isla Mujeres with a groundbreaking ceremony led by Municipal President Atenea Gómez Ricalde, who emphasized that this initiative responds to the commitment to transform public spaces for the benefit of families and expand the destination’s tourism offerings.

“I have always said that public spaces should belong to the people, and today this viewpoint represents, in addition to a triumph for the community, an act of social justice for the island’s residents,” commented the mayor.

She highlighted that Mirador Mar Turquesa addresses the need to organize mobility in the area, improve safety, and strengthen the municipality’s identity, underscoring that everything being built is within the right-of-way to guarantee that this space remains public and accessible to all.

Atenea Gómez emphasized that the construction of Mirador Mar Turquesa will allow it to join the existing tourist corridor attractions in Isla Mujeres, which also include the Punta Sur Sculpture Park, the Malecón Caribe—home to the majestic Mujer Isleña sculpture—and soon the Hacienda Mundaca will be added.

The Municipal President noted that during this administration, significant efforts have been made to defend public spaces, whether on beaches or at tourist sites like the Garrafón viewpoint near Punta Sur.

She recalled that this space was initially rescued through the will of many islanders, merchants, and taxi drivers who refused to lose this marvelous view of the bay, and it will continue to belong to the community.

“Therefore, since our Government began, we started working on the recovery of this and other public spaces, street ends, and rights-of-way,” stated the mayor.

She added that today, the Mirador Mar Turquesa project is part of the Municipal Government’s vision, focused on dignifying public spaces, promoting social cohesion, and creating areas that strengthen the lives of islanders.

Mirador Mar Turquesa will involve general cleaning work, the construction of a 266.15-square-meter pedestrian walkway, the installation of 14 LED lighting poles and a 24-square-meter deck, as well as the adaptation of parking areas.

A photographic stop with the letters “Isla Mujeres” will also be installed, reinforcing the destination’s identity and providing a reference point for visitors.

The event was attended by the Director General of Urban Development, Public Works, and Planning, William Conrado Alarcón, and residents of Punta Sur, who accompanied the Municipal President in this act that reinforced the commitment to continue building dignified and safe spaces for the community.
