Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo — A former dump in the La Loma neighborhood of Isla Mujeres’ mainland area has been transformed into the municipality’s first 7-a-side soccer field, inaugurated by Mayor Atenea Gómez Ricalde.
During the inauguration, Mayor Gómez Ricalde stated that such a project was not possible under previous administrations. “Before, this was not possible in the mainland area. Remember that this was a trash dump, and today it is a very nice field, in a well-regularized neighborhood, perfectly urbanized, with 11 interior streets, a 600-meter linear avenue, sidewalks, curbs, poles on both sides, and lighting with underground wiring,” she said.
She highlighted that this new sports space is the first 7-a-side soccer field in the municipality, representing a historic achievement that will provide youth with modern facilities for sports practice and healthy community interaction.
The project includes the construction of an access module, a shop, reception and general office, benches, bathrooms, men’s and women’s locker rooms, bleachers, as well as the installation of 18 LED floodlights and synthetic turf across the entire field.
Mayor Gómez Ricalde also emphasized that her administration will continue investing in sports infrastructure, not only for soccer but also for other disciplines such as paddle tennis and tennis. She noted that reconstruction of the soccer field in the Salina neighborhood is currently underway, where a tennis court was recently reopened.
She further highlighted progress in rehabilitating the domes in the Salina Grande and La Gloria neighborhoods, spaces she said had been neglected during previous administrations.
