Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo — Local authorities have launched intensified mosquito control operations across Isla Mujeres ahead of the Holy Week tourist influx, conducting fumigation in churches and cleanup campaigns in residential areas to prevent dengue, Zika, and chikungunya outbreaks.
The municipal government, in coordination with Quintana Roo’s health department and the Vector Control Unit of Sanitary Jurisdiction #2, carried out thermal fogging in chapels and parishes throughout the island municipality. The operation aims to protect both local residents and the hundreds of domestic and international tourists expected to visit during the religious holiday period.
“These measures reduce health risks and provide greater safety for parishioners participating in Holy Week activities in our churches,” officials stated.
Complementing the fumigation efforts, public works crews conducted neighborhood cleanup operations in multiple areas. On the island, teams worked in the Sac Bajo and Punta Sur neighborhoods, while on the mainland they focused on Francisco May and the Agricultural Zone.
Residents participated in removing discarded furniture, appliances, and other household items that could become mosquito breeding sites and potential infection sources. The cleanup aims to prevent disease transmission while improving urban aesthetics.
The preventive measures come as Isla Mujeres prepares for increased visitor numbers during Holy Week, when religious activities typically draw large crowds to local churches and public spaces.
