TULUM — The death of a diver that occurred last week in waters near Isla Punta Pájaro is under investigation by the State Attorney General's Office, after the man lost his life upon surfacing under circumstances that have not yet been clarified.
The incident was recorded while a group of tourists was conducting diving activities aboard a vessel operated by local service providers. According to information confirmed by the Tulum Secretary of Public Security, the diver surfaced suddenly and shortly afterward experienced complications that resulted in his death.
Following the incident, authorities secured the vessel and transported four individuals who were on board so they could provide their statements to the Attorney General's Office. The dock where the boat arrived was also cordoned off while forensic experts collected initial evidence and requested information about the equipment used and the conditions of the excursion.
The Secretary of Public Security, Edgar Aguilar Rico, explained that the State Attorney General's Office will determine if there were any irregularities, negligence, or failures in maritime safety protocols on the part of the operators. He stated that the final report must establish, based on forensic analysis and testimonies, whether there was human responsibility or if it was an accident resulting from natural or physiological factors of the diver himself.
Although aquatic activities are common in the region and most local guides have experience, Aguilar Rico emphasized the need to reinforce safety measures and to ensure that vessels comply with current regulations, especially in deep or higher-risk areas.
The identity of the deceased and details about his origin have not been revealed at this time, while the Attorney General's Office maintains an open investigation to determine the cause of death and establish any potential liabilities.
The case has generated concern among nautical service providers, who are requesting greater supervision, constant reviews of diving equipment, and stricter controls on departures to diving areas frequented by tourists in Tulum.
