Drunk Driver Causes Taxi Rollover in Playa del Carmen

An overturned vehicle with police presence and emergency lights in a nighttime setting.

Playa del Carmen, Mexico — A reckless driving incident involving an intoxicated driver nearly ended in tragedy early Friday morning on Playa del Carmen Boulevard. The incident resulted in a severe accident that caused a taxi to overturn.

According to witnesses, the female driver was traveling at an excessive speed when she ignored a red traffic light and collided with a taxi that was in the process of merging onto Constituyentes Avenue. The impact of the collision was so violent that the public transport unit lost control and ended up overturned in the middle of the roadway.

Fortunately, the taxi was not carrying any passengers at the time of the accident, which averted more serious consequences. Meanwhile, two passengers were inside the driver's vehicle and were treated at the scene by paramedics. Following a medical evaluation, it was determined that none of the individuals required transport to a hospital.

The presence of emergency crews and municipal authorities caused a mobilization in the area, where traffic was affected for several minutes during the removal of the wrecked vehicles. Elements of the Municipal Traffic Department detained the responsible female driver, who was taken into custody to begin the corresponding legal procedures.

This latest incident on Playa del Carmen Boulevard again highlights the urgent need to reinforce prevention and awareness campaigns against driving under the influence of alcohol, one of the leading causes of traffic accidents in the region.
