Heavy Rain Floods Playa del Carmen Streets, Exposing Drainage Issues

Flooded streets in Playa del Carmen after heavy rainfall

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — A heavy rain that fell for several minutes in Playa del Carmen caused significant disruption, leaving some streets impassable and exposing the lack of sufficient storm drains for water flow.

The rain caught pedestrians off guard. In areas such as the intersection of Chemuyil Avenue and 28 de Julio Avenue, the storm drains failed to function during the brief downpour.

Another affected area was Tulum Street at 28 de Julio Avenue, where flooding was severe enough to block pedestrian passage. Motorcyclists had to change their routes to avoid falling.

Another flooded point was the corner of Misión del Carmen Avenue and 28 de Julio Avenue. According to residents, there is no storm drain in this zone to prevent flooding.

Puddling was inevitable on all streets due to the accumulation of solid waste, which obstructed the rapid drainage of rainwater.
