Cozumel, Quintana Roo — A tourist visiting Cozumel ended up in a police patrol car searching for thieves who stole from her friend on the beach, highlighting what appears to be a new organized robbery pattern targeting visitors to the island.
On March 24, a woman and her friends chose a beach near Dzul-Ha and the town center for their first day on the island. As they relaxed on the sand, a man approached them from a distance, appearing friendly and harmless. Within seconds, the situation changed dramatically when the man grabbed a bag and ran toward two accomplices waiting on a motorcycle a short distance away.
Police officers arrived to assist the tourists and took them in a patrol car to search for the suspects. The victims remembered that the stolen bag contained an Apple Watch, so they began tracking the device in real time from a cell phone. They searched several areas and eventually arrived at a house where they believed the device might be located. A man living there with his children allowed them to enter and search, but they found nothing.
They gave up on recovering the smartwatch, unaware they were just meters away from where the actual thieves were hiding.
Influencer Reports Similar Incident
The case is not isolated. According to local Cozumel media, influencer Liz Díaz reported a similar attempted robbery on the eastern side of the island. While recording herself on the beach, a man tried to take her cell phone mounted on a tripod. She reacted in time and prevented the theft, but managed to capture video of the suspect fleeing toward the highway where a motorcycle was waiting.
In her testimony, she warned about this type of situation and urged tourists and locals to take extra precautions, suggesting these robberies might be part of an organized modus operandi.
Another report indicates that neighbors mobilized to try to locate the suspected perpetrators after images circulated on social media. Interestingly, the area where this activity occurred coincides with where the tourist and her friends conducted their search, confirming they came very close to finding the thieves.
The incident serves as a reminder that travelers should remain alert at all times, avoid carrying high-value items, keep belongings in sight, and consider safer alternatives like cross-body bags or money belts.
