Cancun — In an operation that raises more questions than answers about the efficiency of the criminal justice system in the state, authorities announced the arrest of Remigio N., a man accused of organized crime and aggravated human trafficking. Although the capture is being touted as an inter-institutional success, the underlying issue reveals an alarming failure in security and judicial oversight.
The arrest took place in the municipality of Benito Juárez, where the location of this Cuban national, who was wanted by the United States government, was finally achieved. Following his capture on this occasion, he was handed directly over to Interpol in compliance with an extradition order issued by a district judge of the Federal Criminal Justice Center based at the North Prison in Mexico City.
However, this case is outrageous to the public. Just in mid-January of this year, Remigio N had already been captured by the Centurion Group, the Navy, and the Army in Superblock 330 of Cancún. At the time, authorities considered him a "priority target" and a key member of an international cell linked to the Sinaloa Cartel, dedicated to human trafficking.
It is incomprehensible how a subject who in January was charged with a firearm for the exclusive use of the Army, magazines, cartridges for a long gun and more than 150 doses of narcotics, was able to regain his freedom in less than three months only to be arrested again for the same crimes.
This situation puts under scrutiny the actions of the Specialized Prosecutor's Office for Combating Drug Trafficking, local judges, and even the Attorney General's Office, who allowed a criminal with a record with the FBI and arrest warrants in Florida to walk the streets of Quintana Roo again.
While authorities celebrate the handover of the detainee to international bodies, the question remains of how many more “priority targets” are entering and leaving through the revolving door of Quintana Roo justice due to errors or omissions in their processes.
