Cancún, Mexico — Two recent cases of animal mistreatment have generated indignation in Cancún, exposing the persistence of cruelty and abandonment towards pets in the municipality of Benito Juárez. Both incidents highlight the urgent need for effective intervention from authorities and public awareness campaigns.

Case in Villas del Mar

The first case was registered on Limón Street in the Villas del Mar neighborhood. Residents reported that a dog has been kept chained for months in an evident state of malnutrition and without access to water or food. Images shared on social media show the animal barely able to move, which provoked outrage among internet users and calls for authorities to rescue the canine and sanction those responsible.

Animal welfare organizations reminded the public that state law classifies prolonged mistreatment and abandonment as a crime. They emphasized the importance of rescue protocols and educational campaigns to prevent new cases.

Case in El Milagro

The second case occurred in the El Milagro neighborhood, where José Trinidad "N" was linked to legal proceedings for attacking a dog with a machete on October 27, causing it serious injuries. Neighbors alerted the authorities, which allowed personnel from Bienestar Animal, alongside the State Attorney General's Office, to rescue the animal and transport it to a veterinary center, where it received medical attention.

Following the presentation of evidence, a control judge imposed precautionary measures on the accused while the investigation continues.

A Pattern of Abuse

These two cases add to another recent incident in Cancún, such as the sexual abuse of a female dog by a homeless individual in Supermanzana 237. Neglect, mistreatment, and abuse of animals can be penalized under the State Law of Quintana Roo, with sanctions that include fines and imprisonment, reinforcing the need to report any act of cruelty and protect animals in vulnerable situations.
