Tulum Visitor Data Shows Major Discrepancies

Tulum, Mexico — During the first half of 2025, the Tulum Archaeological Zone received 628,000 visitors, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics, Geography, and Informatics (Inegi), a figure that was replicated by the Secretary of Tourism (Sectur) of the Federal Government.

However, when detailing the data on the number of visitors to the country's most popular archaeological zones for the period from January to July—one month later—the Sectur publication states that "the most visited archaeological zones in the period from January to July 2025 were: Chichén Itzá, with 1.4 million visitors; Teotihuacán with its on-site museum, with 995,000 visitors; and Tulum with 93,000 visitors, which together represent 51 percent of the total arrivals to these zones."

In interpreting the data, this would mean Tulum experienced a decrease of 535,000 visitors, which would not be possible because the average number of visits per month from January to June is 104,000 people entering the archaeological zone.

If the reported figure of 93,000 visitors is for seven months, there is still a decrease from June to July of 11,667 people who did not visit the Tulum archaeological zone, a number that coincides with conflicts over entry to the Jaguar Park.

The Sectur communiqué concluded that "These spaces, in addition to promoting sustainable development and fostering a greater appreciation for history by offering unique experiences to both nationals and foreigners, also drive tourism activity as a generator of social and economic well-being, in congruence with the mandate of President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, so that the benefits of the sector's good news permeate all members of the great value chain," stated the Secretary of Tourism of the Government of Mexico, Josefina Rodríguez Zamora.
