Ichkabal’s First Anniversary: Free Cultural Events and Stargazing

Visitors exploring the Ichkabal archaeological zone during anniversary events

Chetumal, Quintana Roo — The National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) has announced an extensive program of activities to commemorate the first anniversary of the public opening of the Ichkabal Archaeological Zone, one of the most important Mayan sites in southern Quintana Roo. The celebration will take place from January 30 to February 8, 2026, with free activities aimed at the whole family.

According to official information, the commemorative program includes exhibitions, conferences, guided tours, Stargazing Nights, and a recreational five- and ten-kilometer race. The activities will be held both at the Ichkabal archaeological zone, located in the municipality of Bacalar, and at alternate venues, with the goal of broadening public participation and strengthening the dissemination of the region’s cultural heritage.

Night Tours and Astronomical Observation Among Most Anticipated Events

INAH emphasized that all activities will have free admission, as a way to bring culture and history closer to citizens. To learn about schedules, venues, and details of each event, interested individuals can consult the complete program through the institute’s official QR code.

One of the most anticipated events on the calendar is the night tour of the archaeological zone, accompanied by an astronomical observation session with telescopes, as part of the so-called Stargazing Night. This activity will offer a different experience by combining archaeology and astronomy, allowing attendees to tour Ichkabal under the night sky and learn about the relationship between Mayan culture and the stars.

The Stargazing Night will take place on January 30 and 31, 2026, from 8:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m., within the Ichkabal Archaeological Zone itself. Admission will be free, though with limited capacity of 50 people per day, so interested individuals are advised to stay informed through INAH’s information to secure their spot.

In addition to this activity, guided tours will allow local visitors and tourists to learn more about the history, architecture, and cultural relevance of Ichkabal, while conferences and exhibitions will be oriented toward the dissemination of Mayan heritage.
