“Hurricane Beryl Ravages Neighborhoods: Power Outages and Damage Reported”

On July 5, 2024, Mexican authorities reported on the damage caused by Hurricane Beryl which made landfall in Quintana Roo. The hurricane caused power outages, and resulted in fallen trees and damaged roofs. However, no fatalities or injuries have been reported.

Hurricane Beryl, a category 2 storm, made landfall just north of Tulum, near the county of Solidaridad in Quintana Roo. The storm hit at 05:05 Central Time on Friday, with sustained winds of 175 kilometers per hour, moving west-northwest at 24 kilometers per hour.

Power Outages in Neighborhoods

Assessments are being made to quantify the damage, as the hurricane was still in progress at 07:00 on Friday. Fallen trees, poles, and roofs were reported, primarily in Tulum and Felipe Carrillo Puerto. According to data from the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE), several neighborhoods have been affected by power outages due to Hurricane Beryl. Efforts are underway to restore power.

No Reported Injuries or Deaths; Residents Urged to Stay Indoors

During a morning press conference, it was reported that there have been no injuries or deaths. Temporary shelters have been set up, housing 2,094 people and providing hot meals. However, residents in Tulum, Solidaridad, and José María Morelos are urged to stay indoors until the hurricane has fully passed.

Airports Remain Intact

Airports in Tulum, Cozumel, and Cancun have escaped damage. Once the red alert for Hurricane Beryl is lifted, services will be restored. Significant waterlogging incidents are being addressed. Residents are urged to stay indoors until an official notice is given. The governor of Quintana Roo, Mara Lezama, confirmed reports of fallen trees, cables, and damaged roofs, as well as minor flooding.
