Holbox, Quintana Roo — The hotel sector of Holbox is promoting a project of community tourism routes that began to take shape last year.
Christian Stenta, president of the Holbox Island Hotel Association, said this initiative is part of the strategy to keep Holbox in the spotlight as a destination that offers more than just sun and beach.
The project focuses on consolidating “Kilich Kab: Mundo Sagrado” as a high-value-added biocultural destination. These routes are driven by more than 30 Maya community enterprises, ensuring that tourism benefits are distributed fairly and equitably in the region.
How Will Holbox Integrate with Maya Communities?
The initiative seeks to articulate authentic tourism routes that connect Holbox Island with the jungle and living villages of the continental zone. This helps reduce pressure on the island’s ecosystems and extends visitors’ stays, offering high-value cultural and natural experiences.
Furthermore, with this circuit, the goal is to persuade visitors to extend their stays, venturing into neighboring communities for high-value cultural and natural experiences, which helps diversify the offering and distribute income.
Why Are They Betting on This Tourism Model?
Another objective is to harmonize environmental conservation and economic growth, offering tourists authentic cultural diversity and ensuring that not everything depends on the natural attractions of Holbox Island.
The hotel leader explained that the work with the community of Lázaro Cárdenas municipality is also a great opportunity for Holbox to establish itself as a leading destination in sustainability, authenticity, and territorial responsibility.
Finally, he announced that they managed to close 2025 with 100% occupancy, which confirms that Holbox remains popular with international tourism. Additionally, they will participate in the International Tourism Fair of Spain (Fitur) at the end of January, where they already have more than 40 business appointments confirmed, especially with agencies in the luxury segment.
