Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Quintana Roo — Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa led a civic ceremony commemorating the 102nd anniversary of the death of Felipe Carrillo Puerto, the socialist leader of the southeast who fought ahead of his time for social justice for the poorest. The governor affirmed that in this humanist government, with a feminist heart, indigenous people will not be abandoned.
“Taking up the last words of Felipe Carrillo Puerto, ‘do not abandon my Indians,’ in this government of transformation we do not abandon them. They are a fundamental part of history, of the public policies of the municipal, state, and federal governments, which for the first time gives clear, transparent support to indigenous peoples,” the governor expressed.
During the ceremony held in the main park of Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Mara Lezama reiterated that this different government will continue with the legacy of the socialist leader:
“We will continue working for social justice, remembering the political thought and government actions of Carrillo Puerto, the love for his people that led him to give the greatest thing that exists, his own life,” she quoted.
Accompanied by the municipal president of Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Mary Hernández, and the honorary president of the Quintana Roo DIF System, Verónica Lezama, Governor Mara Lezama recalled the great transformative actions of the socialist leader, such as women’s right to vote, the promotion of the first women who held public office by popular election; land distribution, the creation of the University of Yucatán, the recognition of the minimum wage, etc.
But she made clear that Carrillo Puerto did not walk alone, but counted on the support in unity of his cabinet and the people.
“Today we come to remember that legacy, today we come to make visible that transformation that he achieved, sharing his objectives of social justice, gender equity, and well-being; we can never lose that course,” she said.
During the message addressed to the people of Quintana Roo, Mara Lezama recalled that only in 2025 the state government has invested more than 113 million pesos and there will be more in this 2026. The Puerta al Mar will be opened in the coming days.
Previously, municipal president Mary Hernández read a biography of the life of the hero originally from Motul, Yucatán, whose name the municipality bears.
