Cancun, Quintana Roo — Dozens of people gathered on the white sands of Delfines Beach in Cancun on Good Friday for a Stations of the Cross procession, blending religious observance with the bustling tourist atmosphere of the Mexican Caribbean.
The event drew a mix of worshippers holding rosaries and curious tourists in swimwear, transforming the typically lively beach into a scene of reflection. The sound of waves mixed with prayers as the procession unfolded against the backdrop of the sea.
Bishop Salvador González Morales of the Cancun-Chetumal Diocese participated in the beachfront ceremony for the first time, just one month after assuming his role. He had previously led religious services at the cathedral but chose to join the coastal tradition, which he said he knew by reputation.
His presence added significance to the gathering, which included actors portraying biblical figures, local faithful, and visitors. In his message, Bishop González Morales emphasized that the commemoration centers on the passion and death of Jesus Christ, the core of the Christian faith during Holy Week.
“This is an opportunity to remember that we live in days of grace,” he said.
The bishop also urged attendees not to let the vacation season dilute the spiritual meaning of Holy Week, encouraging prayer, contemplation, and a moment of pause even amid leisure.
The scene highlighted how religious traditions persist in Cancun’s highly touristic spaces, offering a glimpse of faith coexisting with the region’s iconic beaches and visitors.
