Quintana Roo, Mexico — The free public internet project in Quintana Roo continues its expansion with the inauguration of two new connectivity modules in Puerto Morelos, located at Parque Fundadores and the Pescadores dock in the Casco Antiguo. The initiative is part of the digital inclusion program promoted by the administration of Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa.
Luis De Potestad, Vice President of Institutional Relations and Special Projects at GigNet México, reported that the company will maintain the deployment of technological infrastructure in the northern part of the state, with the goal of consolidating a connectivity corridor spanning from Cancún to Tulum.
GigNet Connects Key Tourist Destinations
De Potestad explained that the project responds to a master plan for regional connectivity, whose first modules were installed in Cancún, specifically at Playa Delfines and kilometer zero, with the capacity to connect up to 1,500 people simultaneously.
Subsequently, the network expanded to Tulum, where the modules allow the connection of 600 users, and now to Puerto Morelos, with capacity for 200 devices per point, strengthening connectivity in strategic public spaces.
Free Internet as an Engine for the Local Economy
In the case of Puerto Morelos, the executive highlighted that merchants, artisans, and nearby businesses can already use the network to operate their terminals and digital services. Each module has a one gigabit per second link and an approximate range of 50 meters, representing direct support for local economic activity.
Playa del Carmen, the Next Step of the Project
GigNet reported that meetings have already been held with Municipal President Estefanía Mercado, and advanced that the next module will be installed at Parque Fundadores in Playa del Carmen, a key area due to its proximity to the ferries to Cozumel.
This point will allow tourists and visitors to connect to make reservations, book tours, and access tourist information in real time.
Quinta Avenida Could Join the Digital Corridor
Finally, De Potestad indicated that there is a possibility of extending connectivity along Quinta Avenida, a project that has historically faced difficulties. The proposal contemplates the installation of tourist information totems equipped with internet, in addition to expanding free access to increase the number of connected people.
