Cancún, Mexico — With the goal of publicizing the work they carry out in rural communities across Mexico, the 'Fund for Peace' program is seeking to raise donations and financial support to bring this benefit to communities in the southern part of the state of Quintana Roo.
Mariana García del Río, the promoter of this civil association, stated that the program's objective is to boost the development of indigenous communities living in extreme poverty by increasing individuals' capacities to generate their own living conditions.
The organization has been working for 15 years in San Luis Potosí, Veracruz, Oaxaca, Chiapas, Campeche, and Yucatán. There, they conduct visits to understand the local situation and the barriers these communities face for their development, while also analyzing the natural resources available in each community to create a beneficial project that allows them to generate their own resources.
Currently, they have a presence in more than 110 indigenous language communities, comprised of approximately 40,000 people who receive this benefit.
"We are an organization that seeks to have a local impact on the living conditions and organizational processes of the populations we work with," García del Río said.
She commented that they are not yet working in Quintana Roo, as they need support from the community and the business sector. Opening a community center of this type requires an investment of more than one million pesos.
"It is a large donation, which is why during this visit to Quintana Roo we are seeking to publicize the actions we have carried out, so that people become aware of the benefits that can be achieved in the Mayan populations," she indicated.
Among the projects that have been developed are primarily in the agricultural sector, with the production of coffee, fruits, and vegetables, as well as honey production, livestock, and the raising of other farm animals.
Furthermore, the indigenous communities receive health services, education, and job training. They are also supported in the creation and growth of their entrepreneurial ventures.
