Four Minors and Adult Arrested for Selling Drugs at Cancún Middle School

Four minors and an adult detained by authorities in Cancún, Quintana Roo

Cancún, Quintana Roo — Authorities in Quintana Roo have arrested four minors and one adult for allegedly selling drugs to students at a middle school in Cancún.

The Quintana Roo State Prosecutor’s Office detained the teenagers, aged 15 to 17, along with a 19-year-old man, following a tip from students at the Gabriela Mistral middle school. The arrests came after prosecutors visited the school on February 4 for a drug prevention workshop.

According to witness accounts, the suspects—some of whom were former students at the school—would approach the campus to sell drugs over a perimeter fence.

At a press conference on Monday, Estela Noemí Labastida Rodríguez, the southern zone prosecutor for Quintana Roo, explained that after learning about the illegal activity, investigators gathered evidence that led to the arrests on March 3. Police caught the group near the school in a park adjacent to the campus.

“Based on that information, we opened an investigation for the crime of corrupting minors who lack the capacity to understand the meaning of the act,” Labastida Rodríguez said.

Authorities seized 650 doses of marijuana from the group during the arrest.

“We believe the young people were selling drugs to students entering and leaving the educational facility. They apparently made deliveries through an opening in the perimeter fence that borders the school park,” the prosecutor added.

The minors will appear before a specialized juvenile court judge on Tuesday to determine their legal status, while the adult suspect has already been formally charged.

Labastida Rodríguez said investigations continue to identify and arrest those supplying drugs to students at Cancún schools and other parts of the state.
