Quintana Roo, Mexico — As the Spring Equinox approaches on March 20, 2026, visitors to Quintana Roo have four alternative archaeological sites to experience the astronomical event beyond the crowded Chichen Itza. The equinox, occurring at 4:01 a.m. local time, is celebrated as a spectacle of light and energy, often marked by rituals, meditation, and cleansing ceremonies at Mayan ruins.

Alternative Sites for the Equinox

For those seeking less crowded venues with unique perspectives on Mayan culture, officials recommend these four coastal sites:

  • Tulum: One of the state’s most recognized sites, the Tulum Archaeological Zone features a beach within its grounds and several temples specifically constructed to showcase the sun passing through, creating figures on the walls. Located on Federal Highway 307 Chetumal-Cancun km 230, admission is 210 pesos for locals, 360 pesos for nationals, and 625 pesos for foreigners.
  • Coba: Less saturated than Chichen Itza, this site offers a mystical atmosphere popular with tourists. While it doesn’t feature light figures, it serves as a center of Mayan astrology. Located at Carretera Coba-Chanchen Primero KM. 2, C.P. 77793, Coba, admission costs 190 pesos per person.
  • Muyil: Reopened in February 2026, this site provides direct contact with nature and features architectural alignments that allow visitors to see the sun pass between structures. Located on Federal Highway 307 Reforma Agraria-Puerto Juarez, Km. 204, Felipe Carrillo Puerto, admission is 80 pesos for nationals and 145 pesos for foreigners.
  • San Gervasio in Cozumel: The main sanctuary of the Goddess Ixchel, where visitors can request fertility and renewal during the equinox season. Located at Transversal de Cozumel Km. 7.5, San Gervasio, C.P. 77684, Cozumel, admission costs 235 pesos per person.
