Cancún, Mexico — With the goal of addressing one of the key issues for the tourism industry, a forum will be held to discuss the regulation of vacation rentals. The event is expected to include the participation of business representatives, municipal authorities, and partners from the sector's association.
The forum will take place on November 20 and 21 at the Centro de Convenciones. The objective is to jointly address regulatory measures with the municipalities, as each one faces different realities and needs.
"Well, the tourism law is already in place, and the regulations are still being worked on. Right now, what is being implemented is the RETUR-Q (Registro Estatal de Turismo de Quintana Roo), and it is important that everyone participates in the payment of their taxes," said Manuel Lozano, President of the Asociación de Administradores Profesionales de Rentas Vacacionales. "We are looking at the issue municipality by municipality because they change, and needs are being identified. We have proposals, but they have not yet been presented."
Lozano stated that these proposals could be presented shortly to strengthen the regulatory framework and provide greater certainty to tourists, service providers, and authorities.
One of the points that has been raised is the need to guarantee that all actors comply with tax payments. In this regard, the association acknowledged that there is an effort by all of its members to do so.
The organization, which has approximately 80 members, acknowledged that the sector is going through a complicated period due to the low season, during which a decrease in activity of up to 50 percent has been recorded compared to the summer months.
During that earlier period, while the influx of visitors allowed for some stability, the numbers failed to meet expectations. The current outlook reflects declines of close to 30 percent.
