JOSÉ MARÍA MORELOS, MX — A group of mototaxi drivers from José María Morelos, affiliated with the Confederation of Mexican Workers (CTM), has announced the creation of the "Mujeres de Hierro" (Women of Iron) Women's Mototaxi Club, the first of its kind in Quintana Roo.
Seydi Arely Fuentes Dzib, the general secretary of the CTM in the municipality, stated that this club is intended to strengthen female participation in local transportation and promote new forms of citizen organization. She detailed that this effort was born to provide support, training, and visibility to women already performing this activity, and not to form a new union.
Currently, the club has seven members, although it is estimated that about 13 women work actively as mototaxi drivers and nearly 20 are registered as partners in the union rolls.
Fuentes Dzib indicated that the program includes courses on traffic regulations, basic mechanics, and emergency response protocols, in addition to community support activities. She noted that many of the participants are mothers and heads of household, and the goal is to create a space that facilitates a work-family balance.
"The benefits include constant training, mutual support, greater visibility for women's work, and the opportunity to participate in activities that strengthen both our work as mototaxi drivers and the community we serve," Fuentes Dzib stated.
She reported that the call remains open to active workers and to those who wish to train in this line of work, and she called on interested women to join this organization.
