Bacalar, Quintana Roo — Health officials in Quintana Roo have confirmed the state’s first case of measles, detected in a community within the municipality of Bacalar. The State Health Services (Sesa) has implemented epidemiological surveillance and vaccination protocols to prevent further spread of the highly contagious virus.

Immediate Response and Vaccination Efforts

Flavio Carlos Rosado, Quintana Roo’s Secretary of Health, stated that the situation is under control and emphasized coordination with federal health authorities.

“We have one confirmed measles case in the state. We are working closely with epidemiological surveillance teams, not just at the state level but also federally,” Rosado said.

Health brigades have been deployed to the affected area to reinforce vaccination coverage, particularly among vulnerable populations. Authorities have also initiated a “vaccination blockade,” a strategy aimed at containing the virus within the identified zone.

As of now, no additional measles cases have been reported in Quintana Roo, but health officials remain on high alert.

Urgent Call for Vaccination Verification

Rosado urged residents to review their vaccination records and seek medical attention if they experience symptoms such as:

  • High fever
  • Skin rashes
  • Dry cough
  • Conjunctivitis

“Measles is highly contagious and can spread rapidly if preventive measures are not taken,” the health secretary warned.

Measles Outbreak Reaches 17-Year High in Mexico

The Bacalar case coincides with a nationwide surge in measles infections. As of epidemiological week 19 (May 4–10, 2025), Mexico has recorded 1,152 measles cases—the highest number in 17 years.

Chihuahua accounts for 94.6% of the cases, with most patients lacking prior vaccination. Quintana Roo’s last recorded measles incident occurred in 2019, when an 18-year-old Austrian tourist was diagnosed upon arrival at Cancún International Airport.

Health authorities continue to monitor the situation closely to prevent further outbreaks in the region.
