Fire Department Issues Preventive Alert

Fires in homes and businesses in Playa del Carmen have recorded an increase of between 15 and 20 percent compared to the same period last year, leading the Fire Department to issue a preventive alert due to the sustained rise in emergencies attended in recent weeks, primarily in residential areas of the city’s western zone, with higher incidence in the Villas del Sol subdivision.

The director of the corporation reported that this uptick has caused an intensification in the operational capacity of rescue units, which are being mobilized recurrently to attend incidents in both residences and commercial establishments.

He specified that the statistical behavior reflects a concerning trend linked, for the most part, to a lack of basic preventive measures within properties.

Common Causes Identified

According to preliminary investigations conducted by emergency personnel, a large portion of the fires originate from carelessness related to the use of electrical appliances, including fans and mobile phone chargers that remain connected for prolonged periods, as well as from stoves left on without supervision.

The head of the rescue body indicated that residents’ overconfidence, combined with the absence of a prevention culture, are determining factors for minor incidents to rapidly evolve into events of greater magnitude.
