Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo — A fire broke out Friday afternoon at a vehicle scrapyard in the Continental Zone, destroying nearly 20 vehicles.
Staff at the facility noticed a column of smoke rising from the vehicles and called 911. Firefighters from Isla Mujeres arrived at the scene and, after assessing the scale of the blaze, requested backup from their counterparts in Cancún.
The two crews fought the fire for two hours before bringing it under control. Paramedics evaluated the firefighters for possible smoke inhalation, but no one required medical treatment.
The fire caused extensive damage to the business, leaving nearly 20 vehicles reduced to scrap.
