Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — A fire destroyed at least five palapas on Luis Donaldo Colosio Avenue in this coastal city on Tuesday night.
The blaze was reported shortly before 8 p.m. near Fifth Avenue in the downtown area.
Yivi Mendez Jimenez, director of the local fire department, said approximately five palapas were damaged by the fire.
The cause and circumstances of the fire remain unknown.
Firefighters and municipal civil protection personnel worked to extinguish the flames and will later assess the damage and conduct an investigation.
Police officials have not reported any injuries or cases of smoke inhalation. Red Cross paramedics are on the scene to handle any emergencies.
Authorities are expected to provide more information about the incident soon.
