Cancún, Mexico — A fire completely destroyed the restaurant La Palapita in Cancún’s Region 249 during the early hours of Sunday morning. Authorities allege the blaze was intentionally set by dissatisfied customers who disagreed with their bill.
Suspects Identified in Alleged Arson Attack
The fire began around 4:12 a.m., causing total losses to the establishment. According to the Quintana Roo Attorney General’s Office (FGE), four individuals allegedly threw Molotov cocktails at the restaurant before fleeing the scene. Staff attempted to contain the flames with fire extinguishers, but the rapid spread forced them to call firefighters, who prevented the fire from reaching nearby structures. No injuries were reported.
During a press conference at the Quintana Roo Security Roundtable, Attorney General Raciel López Salazar dismissed extortion as a motive. “It appears to involve individuals who disagreed with their bill. We have already identified these subjects and expect to apprehend them shortly. This is completely unrelated to extortion or protection rackets,” he stated.
Investigation Underway
Authorities have opened an investigation for intentional property damage and attempted homicide. The FGE emphasized that the suspects are known and that arrests are imminent.
