Cancún, MexicoMyst Soundtrack: Mexican Madness, the latest production by Oscar-nominated producer Felipe Fernández del Paso, has turned musical nostalgia into a unique sensory experience at Myst Cancún. Featuring over 30 performers and more than 80 hit songs, the show bridges generations through rhythm, emotion, and collective memory.

Music as Emotion and Narrative

For Fernández del Paso, renowned for his production design work on the 2002 film Frida, music is far more than background noise—it is an emotional roadmap that moves and transforms. “The audience doesn’t just hear the songs; they relive them. It’s about triggering memories, vibrating with every chord, and making the show an intimate yet collective experience,” explains the producer, who currently leads the successful Myst show in Cancún.

Myst Cancún: Beyond a Traditional Concert

The concept of Myst—a contraction of My Soundtrack—emerged nine years ago to fill a gap in musical entertainment. “There was no high-quality production for people who wanted to relive the music they grew up with,” Fernández del Paso recounts. Far from a conventional concert, Myst is a theatrical experience, featuring impeccable lighting, live musicians, detailed costumes, and choreography that guides audiences through a carefully structured emotional journey.

The "Enchinómetro": A Creative Criterion Based on Emotion

A defining feature of the show is its song selection process. “If a song didn’t give us goosebumps, we discarded it. It had to provoke something in us,” he reveals. This led to the creation of the “enchinómetro,” an emotional gauge that shaped the repertoire. The result is an unexpected yet cohesive fusion of artists like Whitney Houston, Miguel Mateos, Frank Sinatra, The Beatles, and Los Ángeles Azules—connected not by genre or era, but by the emotions they evoke.

Mexican Madness: Pride, Rhythm, and Tears

The latest iteration, Myst Soundtrack: Mexican Madness, premiered on July 4 in Cancún with a focus on national pride. Songs like El Rey, La Media Vuelta, and México Lindo y Querido dominate the finale, a sequence that has moved many to tears. “We want the audience to feel overwhelmed by an avalanche of emotions. And if you add a margarita or tequila to that, it’s a complete experience,” the producer adds with humor.

From Cancún to the World: Myst’s Global Expansion

While the show has solidified its place as one of Cancún’s premier cultural offerings, the creative team is already planning expansions to Miami, Buenos Aires, and Spain. Each city’s version will incorporate local musical icons—from Soda Stereo and Charly García in Argentina to Rocío Dúrcal and Hombres G in Spain. Still, Fernández del Paso emphasizes that the heart of the project remains in Mexico: “We want this show to be a source of pride. We want people to leave saying, ‘This is made here—this is Mexico too.’”
