Tulum, Mexico — The visit of Josefina Rodríguez Zamora to Tulum yielded positive results with a proposal to uplift the tourist destination and a commitment from the Presidential Cabinet member to arrive weekly in the locality. This initiative, under the administration of President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, will involve work tables with the participation of state and municipal governments.

For the first time, a high-ranking official from the Mexican Presidency has committed to visiting a destination in Quintana Roo on a regular, short-term basis. Tulum has been reported as experiencing one of its worst crises in hotel occupancy, with a 10 percent drop compared to the previous year.

During a tour conducted jointly with Governor Mara Lezama, as well as state, municipal, and private sector authorities through the Mexican Caribbean destination, Rodríguez detailed that a different strategic sector will be addressed each week to provide solutions to various problems, including those concerning the Jaguar Park. The goal is to ensure positive hotel occupancy by the winter season.

“We are listening to your needs, the problems, which it is important to note did not start just now; it is a series of circumstances that a tourist destination itself has due to its dynamics. So, to tell you that next week, the president announced, we will already be giving the results of the visit,” said Josefina Rodríguez.

Tulum continues to be a trend on social networks due to the decline in tourism, which some users attribute to alleged abuses from high prices paid for services and products in the vacation destination, in addition to the closure of public beaches.

However, Josefina Rodríguez clarified that they are seeking a solution to the matter, echoing the message from the municipal mayor, Diego Castañón Trejo, that it is a campaign of discredit.

“Today it was the hotel sector and a part of the artisan sector, and we will continue next week with another sector, restaurants, service providers, guides, to understand and follow the path. I can assure you that next week you will have immediate, concrete actions, those that we can already do through the combined efforts of the private sector and the state, municipal, and federal governments.”

The hotel occupancy reported by the destination is 54 percent during October, a 10 percent drop compared to the previous year. However, projections indicate that November will reach 80 percent occupancy, and December, during the peak tourism season, will close at 90 percent.
