Cancún, Quintana Roo — Federal agents arrested Erik Gutiérrez Cossío, the coordinator of Cancún’s Tourist Police, on Friday night in an operation that officials linked to the so-called Operation Swarm, which is reportedly directed by Omar García Harfuch.
Officers from the federal Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC) took Gutiérrez Cossío into custody. He is known locally as “Comandante Huracán,” or Commander Hurricane.
The arrest took place during a search of a home on Avenida Chichén Itzá at its intersection with Isla Contoy, in Supermanzana 32, in an operation led by the Federal Prosecutor’s Office (FGR).
According to official information, the Federal Public Ministry in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, is seeking Gutiérrez Cossío. Federal authorities flew him to that city and admitted him to its Social Readaptation Center.
The searched home was left sealed by the FGR.
Like many police and prosecutorial commanders in Quintana Roo, Gutiérrez Cossío is from Chiapas, where he held several positions.
