Cozumel Welcomes More Than 1,000 Athletes for Astri Triathlon 2026

Cozumel, Quintana Roo — More than 1,000 athletes competed Saturday in the Astri Cozumel 2026 triathlon, a race that blended sport, nature and tourism and once again positioned the island as a host of events with national and international reach.

Jacobo Arzate, president of the Quintana Roo Sports Commission (CODEQ), led the start of the competition on behalf of Governor Mara Lezama. He was joined by councilwoman María Fernanda Vargas González and Pablo Aguilar Torres, a representative of the Quintana Roo Tourism Promotion Trust.

The day brought together participants of different ages and skill levels across categories including Junior, Super Sprint, WomanUp, Sprint and Olympic, in both individual and relay formats, along with the Sprint Duathlon and the 3Kids children’s triathlon.

Caribbean Waters Set the Stage

Chankanaab Park served as the starting point for a program that opened with the swimming leg in the waters of the Mexican Caribbean, followed by the cycling and running segments.

Sea conditions allowed the first stage to go ahead at one of Cozumel’s most iconic natural settings. In recent years the destination has built a steady calendar of sporting competitions that draws athletes, their families and other visitors.

The Astri Triathlon now joins a schedule that keeps sporting activity going at different times of the year. Just last weekend, the island hosted IRONMAN 70.3 Cozumel, and in the coming months it will again welcome international cycling and long-distance triathlon events.

Races Drive Tourism Activity

The arrival of athletes and their companions also means business for several sectors of the local economy, including hotels, restaurants, transportation, shops and other services geared toward visitors.

That impact carries particular weight during periods of lower tourism activity, when sporting events help generate visitor traffic and spending at businesses across the island.
