Tragic family dispute ends in double death in Yucatán

Police and forensic personnel at the scene of a violent incident in Espita Yucatán

Espita, Yucatán — A family conflict between father and son ended tragically yesterday morning in the town of Espita after an argument escalated into a machete attack that left both dead.

According to initial reports, the events occurred on a property located on Calle 33 between 28 and 30, where Gutberto P.D., 67 years old, had a heated argument with his son José A.P.G., 42. For reasons still under investigation, the son allegedly attacked his father with a machete, causing fatal injuries.

After the aggression, José A. took his own life, apparently by cutting his neck with the same bladed weapon. Preliminary versions indicate the man suffered from mental disorders and was previously agitated, a situation that likely triggered the violent episode. It was also indicated that the father attempted to defend himself and calm his son, but the outcome was fatal.

According to the first versions, José was self-inflicting wounds with a machete inside his home, a situation that alarmed his relatives. His brother saw him and shouted to their father about what was happening. When the head of the family arrived and realized the danger, he attempted to calm his son and prevent a greater tragedy.

However, the attempt ended in misfortune, as in a violent outburst, José lunged at his own father and attacked him with the weapon, causing extremely serious injuries. Then, the individual cut his own neck and lost his life.

The man’s sister, Natividad P.G., 26, upon witnessing the events, immediately requested assistance from emergency teams given the gravity of what occurred. Elements of the Municipal Police and the Secretariat of Public Security (SSP) arrived at the scene and, after entering the residence, confirmed both deaths. Emergency medical technicians could only verify that they no longer showed vital signs.

The police completely cordoned off the area to allow the work of personnel from the Forensic Medical Service (Semefo) and the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE), as well as agents from the State Investigation Police (PEI), who initiated corresponding procedures to clarify the events.

This incident adds to another violent episode recorded in early December in the Vergel subdivision, east of Mérida, where an argument among several people consuming alcoholic beverages resulted in a machete attack that left two men injured.
