Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo – Playa del Carmen’s iconic Señor Frog’s, a lively landmark on the pier for over 25 years, will be demolished following its abrupt closure in October 2024. The decision, announced by Hernán González, Secretary of Sustainable Territorial Planning, comes after municipal inspections revealed advanced structural deterioration and a serious risk of collapse.
A Playa Party Favorite Comes to an End
Founded in 1971 in Mazatlán by Jesús “Chuy” Juárez and Carlos Anderson, Señor Frog’s became synonymous with beach-town revelry. The concept took off throughout Mexico—Cancún got its location in 1989—and later expanded across the Caribbean and into the U.S. in the 1990s. The brand is part of Grupo Anderson’s, a 100% Mexican hospitality company that also includes Carlos’n Charlie’s and El Squid Roe—and is known for bold décor, high-energy entertainment, and a party atmosphere that defined spring break for countless travelers.

Playa del Carmen’s Señor Frog’s, located near the fiscal pier, was more than just a restaurant. Open-air patios, neon lights, live music, and tequila-themed antics offered an unforgettable experience for families and nightlife seekers alike. Despite mixed reviews, loyal guests praised the restaurant’s vibrant staff, festive mood, and menu featuring Mexican classics and bar bites.
Structural Decline Sparks Closure
Last October, municipal Civil Protection officials cordoned off the site after inspections followed complaints from citizens. Authorities observed visible cracks, tilting beams, and signs of foundational weakness—rendering the site unsafe for employees or patrons. With the restaurant shuttered, municipal engineers assessed that the building posed a serious collapse threat, resulting in the mandate for demolition.
The demolition opens questions about the future of this prime coastal property. Grupo Anderson’s, which boosted its presence internationally but sold U.S. Señor Frog’s locations in 2017, has not announced plans for redevelopment. Locals are curious whether the space will be replaced with a new dining hub, public plaza, or revitalized pier entrance.
Remembering the Legacy
Beyond the wild parties and dance floors, Señor Frog’s helped shape Playa del Carmen’s identity as a destination that balances laid-back beach life with festive energy. As demolition begins, memories linger of belly laughs, camaraderie, and unforgettable nights out under the Caribbean stars. Its departure marks the end of an era, closing a chapter in the city’s evolution from sleepy beach town to dynamic resort city.
