Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Mayor Estefanía Mercado inaugurated a new public transportation hub at the intersection of Tecnológico and Universidades Avenues in the Villas Riviera neighborhood, marking a significant step toward improving mobility and educational access for thousands of residents. The project, which repurposed a previously neglected space once used as a dumping ground, now serves as a functional and dignified bus stop for students and commuters.

A Commitment to Mobility and Education

Accompanied by Secretary of Infrastructure and Public Works Doris Aké Sierra, Mercado also launched two buses servicing three new university routes. The initiative directly benefits over 1,700 high school and university students who previously struggled with transportation challenges.

"Past governments forgot about the people. What was once a dump is now a dignified bus stop. Most importantly, it was built with resources from the people and for the people," Mercado stated during the inauguration, addressing residents and students.

A $3.5 Million Investment in Urban Dignity

With an investment of 3.5 million pesos, the new hub features a metal structure, lighting, curbs, sidewalks, and urban furniture. The project not only enhances transportation access but also revitalizes one of Playa del Carmen’s most densely populated areas.

"This project represents progress and, above all, dignity for our youth. A student shouldn’t miss class because they can’t afford transportation," Mercado emphasized.

The upgraded stop is expected to positively impact over 20,000 residents while improving urban aesthetics and reinforcing mobility infrastructure. Mercado was joined by Villas Riviera neighbors, city council members, and municipal officials, who agreed that such initiatives restore hope to historically overlooked communities.

Through projects like this, Mercado’s administration reaffirms its commitment to governing alongside the people, transforming the region, and upholding dignity for all.
