Quintana Roo, Mexico — Mexico’s Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa) has identified multiple environmental violations in the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve following a nationwide inspection operation.
The agency reported that the damage primarily involves unauthorized land-use changes. Officials collected evidence during the operation, which ran from March 23 to 29, to plan more detailed inspections.
The coordinated effort with the National Commission of Natural Protected Areas (Conanp) covered 41 protected areas across 29 states, aiming to strengthen environmental monitoring and curb illegal activities harming ecosystems.
Authorities issued closures for unauthorized operations and seized vehicles, timber, and wildlife specimens during the nationwide operation. In Quintana Roo, the focus was on detecting irregularities within the Sian Ka’an reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Officials emphasized that interagency coordination is crucial for protecting these zones and conserving biodiversity against environmental threats.
The operation included inspections, land and maritime patrols, and checkpoints across the country. These actions led to the removal of illegal structures and prevented irregular settlements within protected areas.
Participating agencies included the Mexican Army, Mexican Navy, National Guard, Federal Prosecutor’s Office, state prosecutors, and state and municipal security forces.
