Cancún, Quintana Roo — A fire outbreak in the electrical substation of the Tulum Center building on Thursday morning prompted a large-scale emergency response and the preventive evacuation of more than 300 people.
The incident, located on Tulum Avenue, was reportedly caused by a short circuit inside the substation. Smoke began emanating from the machine room area, alerting workers, visitors, and passersby in the vicinity.
Elements of the Heroic Fire Department of Cancún arrived at the site after receiving the emergency call. Specialized personnel entered the building and managed to control the fire before it could spread to other areas. The timely intervention prevented major damage to the facilities and allowed the situation to be contained within minutes.
The area was cordoned off by security personnel to facilitate the work of the emergency teams. Meanwhile, building staff proceeded to evacuate more than 300 people as a preventive measure, following established protocols for this type of incident.
The event drew attention from citizens in the surrounding area due to the presence of emergency units and the partial closure of the roadway while operations to secure the location were carried out.
No injuries or cases of smoke inhalation were reported. Following a general review of the area, authorities permitted the gradual return of personnel to the building.
Electrical technicians conducted an evaluation of the affected installation to rule out further risks and determine the necessary repair work. The full extent of the material damage is currently unknown, but the building remains partially operational while technical inspections are completed.
