Electrical Fault Sparks Fire at Cancun Tire Shop, No Injuries Reported

Firefighters respond to a fire at a tire shop in Cancun's Supermanzana 228 on March 1, 2026.

Cancun, Quintana Roo — Firefighters extinguished a blaze at a tire shop in Cancun’s Supermanzana 228 early Sunday morning, with officials attributing the incident to an electrical fault.

The Cancun Fire Department received an alert around 1:30 a.m. on March 1, 2026, reporting a fire near Avenida 20 de Noviembre in a closed tire shop secured with a metal fence. The flames spread to a vehicle parked in front of the property.

Authorities confirmed the fire resulted from an electrical short circuit that sparked and ignited tires inside the shop, causing the fire to spread throughout the closed premises. No injuries were reported, though the incident caused alarm among residents and prompted a response from police and firefighters.

Some neighbors initially speculated the fire was intentionally set by two individuals on a motorcycle seen minutes before the blaze began, linking it to recent vehicle and store fires in Tulum, Cozumel, and Playa del Carmen that were reportedly protests by criminal groups following arrests. However, firefighters ruled out arson, citing the electrical cause.

The area around Avenida 20 de Noviembre, Niños Héroes, and Kabah streets remains cordoned off as investigations continue, causing some traffic delays. Officials are checking for any risk of secondary explosions.
