Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — After a grueling legal battle spanning more than seven years, Roberto González has finally secured justice. The victim, left quadriplegic following a violent beating by his neighbors in the La Joya subdivision, saw the perpetrators sentenced to prison and ordered to pay millions in reparations.
A Long Road to Justice
The incident dates back to January 2017, when a dispute over pets escalated into a brutal assault. Neighbors Rodrigo "N" and María Fernanda "N" attacked González, leaving him with life-altering injuries.
According to the Quintana Roo State Attorney General’s Office, María Fernanda "N" was sentenced in August 2024 under an expedited procedure to three years, seven months, and 22 days in prison. She was also ordered to pay 6 million pesos in reparations, which were delivered to González in November of that year.
Rodrigo "N" was found guilty of aggravated assault in September 2024 and sentenced to 10 years and one month in prison, along with a court-mandated restitution payment. The sentence was upheld by the Superior Court of Justice in April 2025, though the convicted individual has since filed an appeal, which remains pending.
A Harrowing Ordeal
Throughout the legal proceedings, González endured immense physical and emotional hardship. Despite his fragile health, he was required to attend court hearings on a stretcher after judges denied his request to participate remotely. At one point, he was transported to Mexico City for specialized medical care.
The attack cost González his mobility, his financial stability, and even his marriage. Yet, his resolve never wavered. While the physical and emotional scars remain, he can now close this painful chapter with the assurance that justice, though delayed, has been served.
The case has drawn significant attention, underscoring the challenges faced by victims of violent crime in navigating Mexico’s judicial system. González’s perseverance has set a precedent for accountability in similar cases.
