In response to the potential for a significant sargassum influx on the Mexican Caribbean beaches, eight townships have committed to the sweeping, removal, and relocation of the macroalgae. The cleanup will take place on 100 beaches, spanning 654,611.76 square meters of the Mexican Caribbean coastline. The operation will continue until December 15, 2024.

The Secretariat of Ecology and Environment (SEMA) of Quintana Roo has identified the townships involved as Tulum, Puerto Morelos, Solidaridad, Isla Mujeres, Cozumel, Benito Juárez, Othón P. Blanco, and Lázaro Cárdenas. SEMA has contracted Red Recolector S.A. de C.V., a company based in Nuevo León, to carry out the cleanup.

In Tulum, the cleanup will take place on beaches such as Maya, Mezzanine, Pescadores, Punta Piedra, and Santa Fe, among others. In Puerto Morelos, beaches like Amar Inn Ojo de Agua, Arrecifes Kenwall, Casita Blanca Único, Cayuse-Mercadito, and Hacienda Morelos-Secundaria will be targeted.

In Solidaridad, the operation will cover beaches like Caribe, Constituyentes Avenue, and streets 10, 12, 14, and 16 (Recodo). On Isla Mujeres, the cleanup will include areas like Acapulquito, Aguakan, Andador Trigueña, Bachilleres, Centro, Chiapanecos, Guadalupe, Isla Blanca, La Joya, and Media Luna.

These initiatives aim to maintain the cleanliness of the beaches and the overall health of the environment, preserving the appeal of the Mexican Caribbean for tourists.
