Following a fatal accident on Federal Highway 307 near Puerto Morelos, the Movement of United Organized Transporters of the Riviera (TOUR) is demanding enhanced safety precautions. They are calling for the National Guard to improve flagging in areas where roadwork is underway, and for this work to be carried out at night.
José Bizarro Galván, the president of TOUR, believes that these measures could have prevented the accident, which resulted in one death and several injuries. He suggests that flagging should be placed 300 meters from the worksite, particularly due to the bridge in the area and the heavy traffic flow, which can limit visibility for drivers.
Galván stated, "The accident was a result of this lack of visibility. Even if the authorities cannot change the work schedules, at the very least, we expect them to implement the correct safety measures."
Galván also highlighted other issues on the highway, such as heavy vehicles improperly using bridges and the hiring of inexperienced, underage individuals to drive these vehicles. He stressed that while the transportation sector is significantly impacted economically by these issues, a highway accident also presents a terrible image for tourism.
Galván noted that TOUR is in ongoing discussions with local representatives from the Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications and Transport (SICT). However, if necessary, they are prepared to submit their demands in writing directly to the Federation.
