Chetumal, Quintana Roo — The Chetumal General Hospital is facing a crisis due to a lack of gurneys and sufficient space to care for patients. According to citizen complaints, individuals with surgeries scheduled months in advance are being sent back home due to hospital overcrowding. In many cases, patients have already invested in clinical studies and pre-operative preparations, only to be informed on the day of the surgery that they cannot be operated on due to a lack of beds.
This situation is compounded by shortages of medications and medical supplies, which forces relatives to pay out-of-pocket for essential medical items such as catheters, surgical meshes, and other materials indispensable for patient care. While medical staff continue to make efforts to provide care with the limited resources available, the lack of supplies has overwhelmed their operational capacity.
Meanwhile, in Playa del Carmen, users of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) hospital have reported a series of irregularities and inadequate conditions inside the facility. Following a recent incident in which a doctor allegedly assaulted a patient's relative, multiple testimonies began circulating on social media and messaging groups about the critical state of the building.
Among the complaints are a lack of air conditioning, poor lighting, foul odors, and even the presence of dogs inside the facilities. Patients report being crowded into waiting rooms without ventilation, regardless of whether it is raining or extremely hot, creating unhygienic and undignified conditions.
"The lights barely work, there is no air conditioning, and the bad smells are unbearable. They move all of us to a waiting room regardless of the rain, and there are even dogs inside," recounted one user.
These conditions, warn those affected, not only impact the dignity of patients but also their health and safety.
Both cases reflect an alarming situation in hospital care, requiring urgent attention from the competent authorities. Patients, relatives, and healthcare workers agree that medical care should not be a privilege, but a right guaranteed with dignity and quality.
The conditions of the public health system have once again become the target of severe criticism, this time due to situations affecting both the Chetumal General Hospital and the IMSS facility in Playa del Carmen. Users and patients are denouncing issues ranging from collapsed infrastructure to canceled surgeries due to a lack of supplies and gurneys, highlighting the progressive deterioration of health services.
